What is ICT & it's benefits to children?
This a video I created from Go Animate, but had some difficulty getting it as it exceeded 2 mins n didn't want to pay for full version just to get another 38 secs.. so forgive me for the reflection as I took this video using my hand phone.
WHY?
- To link children's language learning hands-on activities with the help of ICT
- To make classroom activities more fun and meaningful
- Catering to diverse background and needs
- The school wants to start using ICT in the classroom to enhance children's knowledge. e.g. children are given opportunity to use some ICT like operating the CD player to play their favourite songs.
- ICT can support children's development level- cognitive skills. (Baron, 2009) states that children enjoy independent enquiry learning which innovative and appropriate use of ICT can foster.
e.g. children start to misbehave because they are bored of the teacher-directed class. - In the school, it is compulsory for students to learn the three languages used in Malaysia - English, Malay and Mandarin. The need to cater to the children of diverse needs and backgrounds using English as main medium is a challenge.
e.g. 1 Indian girl who code-switches in Tamil and the limited English she speaks.

Curriculum Support
According to ACARA (2012), in the ICT Curriculum it states clearly the need for allowing children to identify how they use ICT in multiple ways on multiple devices.
Example:
Example:
Example:
- taking a photo or playing a digital game with a phone, using a simulation or reading an online book on a tablet
Example:
- sharing experiences of different texts and discussing some differences
- discussing the purpose of texts, for example ‘This text will tell a story’, ‘This text will give information’
- repeating parts of texts, for example characteristic refrains, predicting cumulative story lines, reciting poetic and rhyming phrases
Resources
- Teacher can use smartboard to attract students to focus on the lesson by allowing them to manoeuvre objects, learn language words and even listen to the story.Through using ICT,this will enhance the teaching and learning. For instance audio and visual. The colourful graphic and good music effect throughout the video will capture the children’s interest. e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvC-Sn2eFC0 (Refer to video below)
- Digital cameras can be used to photo graph or video the students, or the students can take the pictures and videos themselves! Then see these digital aspects come to life in a digital story.
- "Show and Tell" using camera. Children can zoom in and out of their subject as they talk about it.
- Ipad - apps like Puppet Pals serves as one of the educational apps the child could use. Children choose theme, characters, and backgrounds and record their story using their creativity. (Refer to image below)
- Students use a computer to play this game and develop mouse control by clicking and dragging objects.
